Both the retina of the eye and centrl nervous system cells are particularly rich
in the omega-3 fatty acids (i.e., n-3 fatty acids), and particularly in
docosahexaenoic acid (DHA;) DHA levels are especially high in the outer segment
membranes of photoreceptors and int he gray matter of the cerebral cortes. Human
milk contains DHA and its precursor alphalinolenic acid, therefore providing the
critically essential fatty acids needed for optimal nervous system development.
At present, however, all commercially produced infant formulas in the U.S.
contain only alpha-linolenic acid in relatively small amounts, which may not be
converted to adequate DHA levels by human infants. Dietary levels of omega-3
fatty acids are known to influence retinal function and visual development in
both primate and human infants. Low levels of dietary omega-3 fatty acids during
early childhood have been corelated with changes in electroretinograms and
visual acuity. makrides and collegues recently reported a direct correlation
between DHA in red blood cells and visual acuity of healthy term infants in the
first month of life. Studies showed that DHA levels in red blood cell membranes
correlated with DHA levels in brain phospholipids. They concluded that when
human milk with DHA is not available, the use of a formula containing DHA may be
the most effective way to achieve a DHA status beneficial for early brain
development.
